They can't take that away from me (VanEps version)

After a long break we're back with one of the greatest :  George Van Eps and the classic Gershwin tune "They can't take that away from me".
If you`re into solo jazz guitar, then you MUST check out his work. Ted Greene was a huge fan and got a lot of influence from him, that tells a lot !

Blues in Bb (Ted Greene)

To continue in our Ted Greene serie, here's a very cool chordal blues in Bb. This is the straight transcription, add some slides, syncopation to bring it to live. Tim Lerch which we mentioned in a previous post did a wonderful rendition in this video :

Darn that dream

Barry Galbraith, 1919 - 1983, remains one of the most admired jazz guitarists of all time. As a studio musician in the 1950's and 1960's he was in such high demand that he left us with one of the richest collections of jazz recordings on record, but at the same time one of the most limited, due to the fact that he most commonly appeared as sideman only.
Here's an arrangement of "Darn that dream" by Barry.

Blues in G (Ted Greene)

This jazz/blues is an actual lesson that Ted did in the seventies, it's in G, mainly chords and has some interesting harmonic features. I love how he creates a motion with  static chords, using the companion minor of a dominant or playing different voicings of a same chord. I realize it may not be the best transcription, it's only an attempt, adapt it to your liking, at least the chords are there.
Tim Lerch who studied with Ted did recorded this blues as a mini lesson on youtube. Check him out, he's a great player with a tasty tone.

Here's that rainy day (arr. by Ted Greene)

Here's an arrangement of Here's that rainy day by  Ted Greene. It's a pretty challenging piece, full of wide stretches. The original lesson sheet can be found here.

When I fall in love

In 1959 Johnny Smith released a fantastic album called "Easy listening" on roost records (yes Cheesy cover). His haunting chordal playing is present in "When I fall in love" the Victor Young standard. His approach to playing chords and harmonizing was quite unique at that time. Don't  hurt yourselves with the wide stretches :)

Ain't misbehavin (arr. by Ted Greene)

Here's a very nice arrangement of Ain't misbehavin from one of my favorite player  : Ted Greene. I'll feature a lot of Ted's work in this blog. The wonderful website at  has plenty of material to work on but Ted's notation is not the easiest to read. Anyway here's my honest attempt to tab it, not perfect, still learning how to use powertab , enjoy !
